About Us

The Facts

TRANScending Barriers is a black trans-led grassroots 501c3 non-profit organization that serves the transgender and gender non-conforming community in Georgia.

We believe in the inclusion of those who are directly impacted, because those who are closest to the problem are closest to the solution.

Our mission is to empower the transgender and gender non-conforming community in Georgia through community organizing with leadership building, advocacy, and direct services so that lives can be changed and a community uplifted.

55,000+ people identify as transgender and gender non-conforming in the State of Georgia.

Our community faces extreme rates of incarceration, criminalization, homelessness and a plethora of other social injustices. More than ever there is a dire need for action!

Transgender and gender non-conforming
people report shockingly high rates of unemployment and employment discrimination.

From our survey report, we found that 48% of the transgender and non-binary people we surveyed were unemployed at the time we surveyed them.

What do we do?

Healing Justice

We believe every trans person is an expert of their own experience, body, and needs. We believe it is necessary to address the root causes of trauma and injustice for individual and collective transformation. We identify the root causes of trauma to holistically respond to and intervene on generational, society, and social institutions' trauma and violence and bring collective practices to impact and transform the consequences of oppression on our bodies, hearts, and minds.

Economic Justice

We create social justice through social impact, storytelling and direct services that are tied to direct actions with the intention of driving impact to create positive lasting change on issues surrounding poverty and inequality in the transgender gender nonconforming/non-binary community in Georgia.

Our programs promote equity, opportunity, and freedom. We combat the injustice and exploitation of our community by expanding our advocacy, policy, and organizing efforts throughout the state of Georgia.

Prison Abolition

We work to dismantle & abolish the systems that maintain oppression and inequalities through punishment, violence, and the control of our people. We demand self-determination and the reorganization of power in Georgia. We collaborate with our inside members across Georgia’s prisons and jails to build stronger inside/outside organizing, uplift analysis, strategy, and advocacy for our family on the inside, and bolster our current & formerly incarcerated family perspectives on ending the harms of criminal punishment.

Health & Wellness

We view  self-care as an act of liberation. We view Reproductive Justice as a human right to control our own sexuality, gender,  work, and reproduction. This right can only be achieved when all TGNC folx have the complete economic, social, and political power and resources to live and thrive. Our work demands resolute answers to the issues that affect TGNC health and wellness.

Re-Entry Supportive Services

Without Re-Entry Support upon release from incarceration, transgender & gender-nonconforming people in the State of Georgia are forced into a cycle of incarceration to be left in a state of hopelessness.

Through our Re-Entry Program, we break the cycle of incarceration and remove the harms of the criminal punishment system on TGNC people, while proactively abolishing these harms so that lives can be changed and a community uplifted.
